Freeman A. Hrabowski, III was named as UMBC's president in 1993. In his installation address, he stated that “We will continue to strengthen our arts and sciences programs, for the benefit of all our students. We will be a national leader in educating students in science and engineering, including minorities and women. And we will continue to focus on issues of diversity." Twenty-six years later, the promises Hrabowski made to the campus community have been a map to one of the most successful university presidencies in American higher education history.
