UMBC has launched a $1.6 million partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools and Northrop Grumman for education in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) for Baltimore's K-12 students. The news was announced January 7 at Lakeland Elementary/Middle School in Southwest Baltimore, which already works with UMBC through several university initiatives. The partnership will allow for the development of a STEAM center at the school to provide resources for students, teachers, and members of the surrounding community, and for the expansion of the Choice Program to two other City schools.
President Hrabowski (pictured here with partners and Lakeland students) says this partnership will prepare students to be competitive in the global economy: "We want to be saying that we can take children from any background...and make them [the] best in the world."
Did you have the chance to work with Lakeland students while you were here, through the Sherman Scholars Program, the Shriver Center, or the Choice Program? Tell us about it here.
