In 1981, rumors that the State Board of Higher Education was planning to close UMBC and turn the campus into an industrial park sparked a massive student protest on the quad. These rumors were denied by then-USM President John Toll and then-Chancellor John Dorsey, and obviously we're still standing today, but if anything, this goes to show we've been a rabble-rousing bunch from the beginning (or in this case, the middle).
