Calvin B. Lee was selected as UMBC's new president -- a position then known as "Chancellor" -- in the summer of 1971. Lee was one of the youngest university leaders in the country -- and one of the first Asian-Americans as well -- and his selection represented a passing of the torch from the founding leadership of the university to a new generation.
